Here is Jubil taking some establishing shot over the Arndale carpark roof

Here is Gasim doing the same.
In our planning, we discussed potential locations for our music video. All our locations eg. Wit worth park, town centre is all free and accessible at all time to shoot. However one place which was not free to shoot to was our scene at the club during the very high beat of the video. For this we decided to send the email to a local bar (Bar ‘one) asking for permission to shoot at the club. We did this is because it is professional. By doing this it gives us a plan to work around and our shooting days.

Shisha Bar
Hookahs Shisha bar is another location where we are going to film our video. To be able to do this we have sent out and email to the company asking permission to use the bar to film. We decided on this location because smoking and drinking is what comes to mind of the public when they think about teenagers and young adults. Because our target audience is teenagers and young adults we have decided to shoot one of our scenes in a shisha bar where there is a lot of smoking involved. Also I think it fits into the context and rhythm of the music video.
We decided to film parts of our music video against the wall. We have looked at many other music videos and saw shooting against a constant background was very common. We decided to film on the wall of our college. We decided because the light was very good at the area and it was easy to get to.

Casual clothing such as plain standard hoodies, chino pants and converse reflect the genre of the music we’ll be using in the video. Our costumes are also stereotypical teenager clothes and also apply to the genre of music we have picked. We picked the standard Converses because they are casual trainers not very fancy, and standard hoodies to give off an ‘indie’ look.
The term Rhythm and Blues was used as a synonym for Black Rock and Roll in the 1950s. This influence is evident in forms of Rock Music, Country and Western, Gospel music, Jazz and also in Non-Western forms of music.
Just prior and during World War II (1939-1945) changes took place in the US social, industrial and technology sectors causing a widespread change in American demographics where black Americans migrated from the rural South to Midwest, Northeast and West Coast cities to work for higher income.
These changes brought about the creation of new music styles such as the Rhythm and Blues to suit the changing taste of this group of people.
There were three technological developments that took place, namely the invention of electric guitars, the discovery of the German-invented tape recorder which simplified the recording process and the rise of television broadcasting in the late 1940s.
These led to radio owners to sell off their radio stations presuming that it would become obsolete because of the popularity of television. These new radio station owners sought black American musicians and this allowed the sounds of Rhythm and Blues to be aired to the ubran black audience.
To get an idea of the music video and what shots to have in it, we created a storyboard of shots that we could have in the music video. These are some images of our storyboard that we created:
By doing this it gave us a beeter understanding of what to film and how to film it. We used this as a guideline for our music video and added our creative thoughts to this.
Shot 1- This will be an establishing shot looking down at the city of Manchester. This will be done as a high angle shot and panning will be used to get a variety of scenes. This is done to set the scene and to let the audience ‘get a feel’ with the location. Zooming will be used also.
Shot 2- This will be done by all four members of our group. This shot will be a extreme close up with the shot angle being eye-level. This is so that the actors lips can be seen.
Shot 3- Shot will be a medium close up at eye level. This is so that the face of the actors can be seen as well as the background. A medium close is used so that the audience focuses on the actors and not the background to much.
Shot 4- This will be a low angle shot of the actors sitting on a concrete wall with a church overshadowing the actors.
Shot 5- Over the shoulder will be used as well as a high shot at the club. This is done for the audience to see more of the whole shot
Shot 6- Crabbing shot will be used here. The camera will be on a trolley being pushed, parallel to the actor walking. This will at eye line level.
Shot 7- At the park the camera will be still and the actor will be walking towards the camera getting closer and closer. This will make the shot look like it is zooming in.
Shot 8- Medium close up will be used when the actor is lisping the words. This is to show the emotion and the words clearly. The shot will turn into a medium long shot so that the location and the scenery can be seen by the audience.
Shot 9- Over the shoulder will be used as well as a high shot. This is done for the audience to see more of the whole shot at the club.
Shot 10- This will be done by all four members of our group. This shot will be a extreme close up with the shot angle being eye-level. This is so that the actors lips can be seen.
Shot 11- A low angle shot will be used here as well as he actor being to the left of the shot (rule of thirds). This is so that the audience can get a better view of the background.
Production Treatment
Song Title: Stay Awake – Example
Duration: The music for our video lasts for 3minutes and 25 seconds. This is within the boundaries for the ideal requested length of the music video.
Audience: Our video may contain clips that are not suitable for younger audiences which makes our main target audience teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19. Our video will contain scenes with flashing lights, therefore will be unsuitable for anyone with photo sensitive epilepsy. The song relates to the average student life therefore making the target audience more relevant.
Budget: Our video is going to be a low budget video (Zero budgeting). This means we are going to plan to spend as little as possible however if we do need some funding we shall equally split it between the group.
Recording Days: We decided that the best time for the group to film would be on the weekend and some evenings during the week. This means we will have loads of time to get plenty of filming done. We will have 3 weeks for filming the music video. Once the music video has been shot, we are gong to have 2 weeks to edit the video.
This is our idea’s that we put forward on our planning meeting. We decided to brainstorm ideas onto the computer about the music video. This gave us idea’s on the music videos.
Name: Elliot John Gleave aka Example
Born: 20 June 1982, London
Genre: Hip-Hop
First Single: I Don't Want To
First Album: What We Made
First Big Top 40 No.1: Changed The Way You Kiss Me
Elliot John Gleave, also known as Example was born on June 20th 1982 in London. Elliot John Gleave the elder of two children attended Ashcroft Technology College. He said the main reason he started rapping was because of the introduction of Hip-Hop through the albums of Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dog.
While at university he started garage Mc’ing to make some money. It was during this period he met Joseph Revell also known as Rusher which we would go on and work with. Example and Revell made there first album together which included Examples first white label vinyl release ‘ a pointless Song’. In 1992 Example won Royal Mail Poet of the Year
We as a team have decided to choose to so the song 'Stay Awake' by Example as our music to our music video. We choose this was because we have analysed similar songs by the same artist and music videos of songs which have the same genre.
We decided to do the song ‘Stay Awake’ because it was a song by the artist which all members of our group listened to and the song was very popular among all of this. Alongside this the song was fast and had a high tempo which we had a lot of ideas for, to do in the video. Also we felt the song had some slow tempo and slow paced sections in the song which build up and build up into a very high paced and high tempo and therefore we like the buildup of the song and the variations of high tempo and low tempo.
Video Analysis: Calvin Harris Feat. Kelis - Bounce feat. Kelis
The video being analysed is Calvin Harris Feat. Kelis - Bounce feat. Kelis This is a mixture between narrative and performance, the white man who is the main character in the music video, is shown throughout the whole video there are some shots in the video of him acting nothing to do with the video, and other shots of a female called ‘Kelis’ who is shown to be doing a performance at the end.
Genre of the song:
The genre of the song is of a similar genre to the song we decided to use for our video. There are very jumpy scenes (when it kicks in) and also gives off a party theme song such as other ‘Example’ videos and songs we decided to analyze. There is not much link between the video and the lyrics although the song is called ‘’bounce’’ and the main character bounces a tennis ball there and then.
Camera use:
Throughout the whole video the camera follows around this skinny white male who has a minor argument at the start with a female who he gets over it quite quickly and meets some of his friends, because its following one character throughout there are many close ups and medium shots. Same as when ‘Kelis’ the singer in the song is performing there are many close up’s and long shots to show them both in the scene.
Use of props & costumes:
The name of the song is ‘bounce’ therefore the tennis ball being bounced is a prop they used to signify this. The headphones around his neck he wears he listens to music through are a prop, also sunglasses, white trainers & chains are props all of the main character’s friends wear as a ‘style’.
Location:
The main locations used in the video are the main character’s house where he changes his clothes at. The city centre where he roams around with his friends, and at the end when he is at the clubs dancing. Also Kelis is shown performing with some cast around her in an abandoned area.
Lighting:
At the start it seems like the morning… the sun is shining he’s wearing his sunglasses etc… Then it gets darker as the video continues to play and ends up in the club with his friends. When Kelis is performing its dark outside, with some lighting shining on her face showing her expressions.
Wretch 32 in his video ‘Don’t go’ he wears all black in the complete video. He wears a black shirt over a smart black long coat. He also wears black jeans and black trainers throughout the video. Wretch 32 wearing black in the video could represent sadness and so by him wearing black could represent he’s loosing someone very close to him e.g. Girlfriend. Also the fact he is wearing black fits in with the feel of the whole song of sadness.
Editing
The umbrella could be a symbol how he sees the world as being gloomy since his girlfriend left .
