Artist and name of the song

The song we are analyzing is called: ‘Don’t Go’ by Wretch 32 ft. Josh Kumra

Genre

The genre of this song is R&B, with rapping in the verses and singing in the chorus. There is lots of performance which is a common feature of R&B videos. It is a little unusual for R&B as it is talking about a serious relationship.

Location/ Scenes

Location of the video by Wretch 32 ft Josh Kumara ‘Don’t Go’ is mainly located in a modern, well-developed city with the use of buildings and water throughout the music video. At the start of the music video we see Wretch 32 for the first time against a white wall wearing all black looking down. This could represent the title of the title of the album ‘Black& White’

The next shot of Wretch 32 is when he is sitting down on stairs which are also black and white. The colour black and white can be seen throughout the video. We can see the stairs are wide and tall and Wretch 32 is sitting down by himself. This shows us that even though there is this whole place he is the only one and feels lonely and single.

Another scene we see of wretch32 at the start of the video is him walking through a crowded street of people alone. The camera is focused on him (Shallow depth of film) to show us his loneliness. Loneliness is the first thought that comes to mind when the camera shows Josh Kumra for the first time. He is walking away from the camera. This could represent the ever growing distance from him and his girlfriend. Also the fact he is alone on a bridge reiterates the fact of loneness.

Costumes

Wretch 32 in his video ‘Don’t go’ he wears all black in the complete video. He wears a black shirt over a smart black long coat. He also wears black jeans and black trainers throughout the video. Wretch 32 wearing black in the video could represent sadness and so by him wearing black could represent he’s loosing someone very close to him e.g. Girlfriend. Also the fact he is wearing black fits in with the feel of the whole song of sadness.

Josh Kumra

Josh Kumra wears a casual black open jacket over a plain white T-shirt. I think the fact he’s wearing a plain white t-shirt is to show he is feeling alone and empty without the person he is asking to ‘Don’t go”. Josh Kumra in the video is also wearing a necklace. As the audience this makes us think the relevance of the necklace. I think as the necklace is rather feminine and the necklace was one of the person who h is asking to ‘Don’t Go’ e.g. girlfriends. He has worn this in memory of his girlfriend and to make the audience feel the love between them.

Editing

As this is quite a slow moving and emotional song the editing is relatively slow and simple. The shots are regularly cut from one another in time with the music and there are lots of slow pans. Editing goes from showing both artists lip-syncing to shots of different people and Wretch 32 wandering down a crowded street.

Graphics

This video contains some interesting graphics. Black writing written on a white wall saying ‘Life is…’ appears a few times. This relates back to the title of his album ‘Black and White’. He is trying to tell us that life is black and white.

An image of a woman sitting in front of black wings drawn on a white wall appears a number of times. This could represent her being innocent and angelic or it could represent her flying away as the song is about his girlfriend leaving.

The umbrella could be a symbol how he sees the world as being gloomy since his girlfriend left .

Special effects (Sfx)

Effects used to shot ripples in water from different angles and positions and ripples used as an effect to show reflections of people in the water
